When people begin to consider divorce, emotions are usually running high. It is common to feel hurt and anger, but those feelings can make it difficult to make wise decisions about the vitally important issues you face regarding finances, marital property division, and child custody.

A divorce attorney plays a key role in helping people find resolutions they can live with now—and in the future—by helping clients see the broader picture and the long-term impact of decisions.

A solution-oriented attorney with a calm and thoughtful approach can make all the difference in how your divorce progresses. Family law attorney Nakia Gray represents clients with a wide range of family law concerns. Contact our Greenbelt or Chevy Chase family law office to learn more about how we can help you with any of the following issues:

Should We Take It to Court?

Many people think of divorce court as their first resort to resolve disagreements in the divorce process. We encourage our clients to see it as the last resort.

There are other options that can save you time, money, and bad feelings while also allowing you to have more control over the important decisions in your life.

Ms. Gray's job as a divorce and family lawyer is to look out for your best interests and to help you accomplish your goals. You can count on her to advise you on strategies that increase the chances you will achieve the results you want while minimizing the possibility of an unsatisfactory outcome.

She will take your case to court if we decide with you that it is in your best interest to do so, and she is an aggressive advocate in court when negotiation is not possible.

If You Are Not Safe at Home, Get Immediate Help

The time surrounding a divorce can be very dangerous for some people. If your partner has a history of violence and abuse, has made verbal threats, or has begun stalking you, you need to take immediate action.

If you are under immediate threat, call 911. When you can address a longer-term solution, contact us for help obtaining a civil protective order. We will help you with your request for a temporary restraining order and with the second hearing needed to obtain a permanent order.

A temporary order only lasts 7 days. You must attend the second hearing in order for a permanent order for protection to be issued to keep your abuser away from you for one year. Attorney Gray can also help you seek an extension to that order if you need one.
